GRAPELAND —
Those who enjoy all things western may want to saddle up for the fifth annual Wild West Festival Friday and Saturday at Salmon Lake Park in Grapeland.
Some of the festivities will include the Texas Top Guns Re-enactment Guild of America Competition, Cowboy Art Show, authentic cowboy food and cowboy poetry.
The Texas Ranger Museum will be there as well as other vendors from Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana. Spurs, bits and saddles as well as old cowboy memorabilia, antiques and Indian jewelry will be for sale.
“It will be a great day of family fun reliving the Old West with lots of vendors with cowboy stuff for sale — bits, spurs, chaps — just everything,” festival spokesman Nelson Kennedy said. “There will be a lot of fun things to see if you like antiques and Old West-type stuff.”
The event will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Admission and parking are free.
“Salmon Lake Park is a perfect setting with all of the old buildings. It really adds to the western atmosphere,” Kennedy said.
Live music is planned for Friday. At 3 p.m. Saturday, a drawing will be held for a barbecue grill and smoker.
“This will be bigger and better than in the past — one of the biggest in East Texas,” Kennedy said.
The Texas Top Guns members will be cooking on their chuckwagon. Catfish and other food items will be available as well.
To get to Salmon Lake Park, follow the signs on Business U.S. 287 through Grapeland or call 903-687-2594 for directions as well as information on cabins, campsites and RV hookups. For vendor information, contact Nelson at 903-549-2134.
