Texas Comptroller Susan Combs recently announced that state sales tax revenue in September was $1.96 billion, up 11.6 percent compared to September 2011.
“Continued strength in the manufacturing and oil and natural gas sectors led to the sales tax revenue increase,” Combs said. “Collections were also boosted by improvement in consumer spending at restaurants and retail stores. State sales tax revenue has now increased for 30 straight months.”
Combs sent October local sales tax allocations totaling $551 million to cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts. October local sales tax allocations are up 9.1 percent compared to October 2011.
Texas cities received $361.9 million, up 7.5 percent compared to October 2011. So far this calendar year, city sales tax allocations are up 8.1 percent compared to the same time period last year.
Two Anderson County’s three municipalities — the cities of Frankston and Elkhart — showed higher payments this month, with increases of 1.4 percent and 14.24 percent, respectively.
The City of Frankston’s payment went up $230 — from $16,338 to $16,568 compared to the October 2011 payment. The city’s year to date payments increased as well — going up $5,786 in comparison to the 2011 October year to date payment of $156,135.
The City of Elkhart’s payment of $8121 increased $1,012 versus last year’s October payment of $7,109. Year-to-date allocations increased $4,118 — from $85,905 in 2011 to $90,023 in sales tax allocations received so far in 2012.
The City of Palestine’s sales tax payment of $446,792 dropped a slight $6,678 compared to last year’s October payment of $452,470. The year-to-date payment of $4,968,239 also fell $8,853 (-0.17 percent) compared to the October 2011 payments to date of $4,977,092.
Texas counties received sales tax payments of $38.1 million, up 12.8 percent compared to last October. So far this year, sales tax allocations to counties are running 14.5 percent ahead of this point in 2011.
Anderson County’s sales tax payment increased, with an October payment of $268,388 — up $84,084, or 45.62 percent over last year’s October payment of $184,304.
So far this year, the county has received $2,154,451 in sales tax payments — up $339,671 (18.71 percent) compared to the 2011 payments to date of $1,814,780.
Combs sent $27.3 million to Texas’ special purpose taxing districts, up 19.2 percent compared to last October. Local transit systems got $123.7 million in sales tax allocations, up 10.6 percent compared to a year ago.
The sales tax figures represent monthly sales made in August.
