PALESTINE —
Palestine police are investigating the cause of a two-vehicle wreck Monday afternoon that resulted in the death of an elderly Nacogdoches woman and injured another.
According to reports, officers responded to a major wreck involving two vehicles at Loop 256 North and U.S. 287 at about 4 p.m. Monday.
The initial investigation indicates that a Chrysler Town & Country minivan was traveling east on Loop 256 and exited the loop in an attempt to turn onto U.S. 287.
According to witnesses, the van — driven by 75-year-old Patricia Blake of Nacogdoches — pulled up to and stopped at the stop sign, then pulled away from the stop sign and into the path of oncoming traffic.
Also in the van was 78-year-old John Blake.
The second vehicle, a 2002 Mercedes Benz driven by 45-year-old LaVanda Wilson of Elkhart, was traveling south on U.S. 287 and was unable to stop before colliding with the van.
“All parties involved were transported the Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment,” Palestine Police Sgt. James Muniz said. “The driver of the Mercedes was later transferred to a Tyler hospital for further treatment.”
Patricia Blake died at PRMC of injuries she received in the wreck. John Blake was admitted to PRMC for further treatment. His injuries were not thought to be life threatening.
“The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation at this time,” Muniz said.
