A 22-year-old Frankston man has been indicted for capital murder by a Henderson County grand jury in relation to the summer killing of a 18-year-old woman in a Coffee City subdivision near Lake Palestine.
Jackie Martez Guthrie, 22, of Frankston recently was indicted on the capital murder charge, according to Henderson County District Attorney R. Scott McKee.
Shortly after 10:30 p.m. on July 19, Henderson County authorities say a caller reported hearing gunshots in the Brierwood Bay subdivision in Coffee City.
Upon their arrival, Henderson County sheriff’s deputies discovered 18-year-old Chantel Barret deceased from an apparent gunshot to the back.
Officers subsequently determined that Guthrie had fled the scene in Barret’s 2001 Ford Crown Victoria, taking his girlfriend, 19-year-old Tiffany Hurd, as a hostage.
Guthrie was arrested by Galveston police near that city’s seawall one day after the fatal shooting.
Guthrie was in possession of a 9 mm firearm at the time of his arrest, according to Galveston police.
Hurd was unharmed, according to authorities.
Under current law, the state could elect to seek the death penalty against Guthrie or a “capital life” sentence which would keep the defendant in prison with no hope of parole if found guilty.
