Book lovers won’t want to miss the chance to stock up their book shelves at the Palestine Library Friends’ book sale on Saturday at the Palestine Mall.
The book sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Harlequin romances will be sold for 10 cents. Paperbacks will cost 25 cents and softback books will be $1. Hardback books will be sold for $1.25.
“This sale is the perfect opportunity for you to find gently used, bargain books that you won’t feel guilty about accidentally losing at the airport or leaving at your relative’s house,” a news release said.
All proceeds benefit Palestine Public Library.
Sanctuary House Fund-raiser set
A fund-raising dinner to help the Sanctuary House organization is planned at 6 p.m. March 18 at the Ranch House.
Dinner will be a special menu for $15 per ticket.
Willowcreek Chiropractic & Wellness Center will present a short wellness talk. The public will have the opportunity to schedule a $20 office visit to which all proceeds will benefit Sanctuary House as well.

Cemetery Walk slated April 6
Actors dressed in period costumes will portray residents from the city’s past in a historical Cemetery Walk event planned Saturday, April 6 at the Palestine City Cemetery.
Hourly tours will start at 9:30 a.m. Participants will meet Captain William Kimbro, a veteran of the Battle of San Jacinto; Louisiana “Aunt Bee” Small, who nursed Civil War soldiers from Granbury's Brigade; Alexander Joost, who owned the first store on the courthouse square; Dr. Henry H. Link, a physician who began his practice in Palestine in 1851; and Mary Micheaux Swanson, a member of one of the city’s founding families.
“You will also meet other historical residents of Palestine and learn more about the history of our city and how people lived during the period from the time Texas became a state in 1846 to the period immediately after the Civil War,” a Palestine Public Library news release said.
Tickets are $15 per person and are available at the library. All proceeds benefit the maintenance of the Palestine city cemeteries. Contact the library at 903-729-4121 for further information.
Alleman achieves Eagle Scout rank
Drew Harris Alleman of Boy Scout Troop 72 in Dallas has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. For his Eagle Scout project he built shelves and storage units to organize the youth department’s attic space at Highland Park United Methodist Church.
Alleman, 18, is a senior at Highland Park High School. Upon graduation he plans to major in business administration.
Alleman is the son of Sara and Marty Alleman of Dallas and the grandson of former Palestine and Bois d’Arc resident, LaVeda Wilbanks Norris of Longview.
Alleman dedicated his Eagle Scout award in memory of his cousin, Eagle Scout Greg Crampton, and his grandparents, Alton Norris and Virginia and John Alleman.

According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, while on patrol in the early morning hours on Saturday, deputy Johnny Gorden saw a suspicious vehicle sitting on the side of U.S. 287 between Palestine and Elkhart. -
