Palestine Main Street was recognized Monday during the Palestine City Council meeting for successful annual progress as a designated Main Street community.
The Texas Historical Commission’s Texas Main Street Program announced Palestine’s placement at the winter gathering of Texas Main Street managers.
Palestine Economic Development Corp. Director Wendy Ellis presented the Certificate of Recognition to the Main Street Advisory Board, represented by board members Jean Mollard, Marilyn Sheridan, Ava Harmon and Main Street Manager Laura Westgate.
“Our board and community work very hard all year to support and promote our Main Street District. This award is a wonderful recognition of all the volunteer efforts and staff partnerships throughout 2012,” Palestine Main Street Manager Laura Westgate said. “These efforts are a comprehensive approach to preservation-based revitalization for a community and this award recognizes the local efforts.”
Sixty-seven designated Main Street programs in Texas were recognized. Palestine will be further recognized as a nationally accredited program by the National Main Street Center, a subsidiary of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, at the National Main Street Conference in New Orleans in April.
Accredited programs show above average performance in 10 categories on an annual report. Selection criteria focuses on planning, partnerships, staffing, volunteer effort, preservation ethic, training and program assessment through reporting. The state office also works with programs throughout the year by providing various services based upon local needs.
The Texas Historic Commission’s Texas Main Street Program is a revitalization program for historic downtown and neighborhood commercial districts. It is based on the Four-Point Approach™ — organization, design, promotion and economic restructuring — all within the context of historic preservation. Implemented nationwide and in Texas in 1981, the Texas program has assisted approximately 165 communities throughout the state.
Other cities recognized in East Texas include Tyler, Carthage, Corsicana, Henderson, Kilgore, Longview, Lufkin, Mineola, Winnsboro and Longview.
