PALESTINE —
The Veterans’ Historic Education Center is collecting items now through Nov. 9 to send to the locally-deployed National Guard soldiers.
“The VHEC would like to encourage everyone in the community to help fill boxes for our deployed National Guard soldiers. Being away from home is hard on these soldiers as well as their families. By sending them boxes with a little bit of home we show that we support them and are thankful for the sacrifices that they are making,” VHEC Director Evelyn Cupit said.
Items needed include: socks, soap, razors, toothpaste, mouthwash, body and foot powder, individually wrapped snacks, fitted twin sheets (bottoms only), hand games, puzzles and board games (within size limits), blank greeting cards they can use to send to their families, letters and notes of encouragement from the public.
“We also would like to add some fun items in these boxes,” Cupit said. “But remember, the special postal boxes are 12x12x6, so all items must be able to fit into the boxes.”
The VHEC is continuing to show support to the National Guard by the yellow ribbons displayed around the National Guard Armory and the pins the VHEC has passed out to members of the community.
“This ties back to the Community Covenant that our county judge, mayor and county service officer signed in 2011 declaring that we are a community devoted to providing services and help for our veterans and active military,” Cupit said. “Let’s make a soldier smile when he gets our package.”
