Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 991 and Associates 991 are once again showing their support for those men and women fighting for freedom by gathering donations for care packages to send to soldiers serving overseas during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.
“We want to do something to benefit those serving at patrol bases, combat outposts, observation sites and forward operating bases,” VVA member Debbie Wesson said. “A lot of packages go to the main bases, and we want to ensure these posts get packages also.
“A nice taste of something from home can be the biggest pick me up a soldier can have,” she added. “With your help, we can make things a little nicer for these sites where they have very little.”
Suggested items for donation include: Treats, sanitizing wipes, small packets of ketchup, mustard, pickle relish, mayonnaise, small cans of tuna, chicken, ham, deviled ham, etc. Plain Visine, puzzle books, AA batteries (lithium only), blank greeting cards for the holiday (as they can’t get them over there), feminine hygiene products, coffee, teas and razors (with the aloe strip so they don’t need shaving cream).
Christmas cards addressed to the soldier also may be included with the donations, which are being collected at Dogwood Trails Assisted Living, located at 1625 W. Spring St. in Palestine.

The YMCA 2012 Pink Ribbon Campaign
The Palestine YMCA is asking the community to walk (or run) for the cause this month as part of its 2012 Pink Ribbon Campaign.
Those who wish to participate must first sign up to walk or run during the month of October and pick up a sponsorship packet from the YMCA, located at 5500 N. Loop 256 (next to First Baptist Church) in Palestine.
Participants then ask family and friends to sponsor them for a certain dollar amount per mile. Log your miles walked or ran on the street or a treadmill, collect the money and turn it in.
Contributions will be presented to Paint Palestine Pink, a local organization that helps area women and men get mammograms.
The YMCA will make its treadmills available to all participants in the run, both members and non-members. For more information, call YMCA Wellness Director Sharyn Hightower at 903-729-3139.
PHS Class of 1982 Reunion
The Palestine High School class of 1982 will hold its 30th class reunion on Oct. 19 and 20 in Palestine.
Activities begin at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19 with a free pre-game meet and greet at Comfort Inn & Suites Hospitality Room in Palestine. Game kickoff will be at 7:30 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
A dinner and dance will be held from 7 to 11 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Bella Sera Ranch, located at 286 Anderson County Road 1400 in Palestine. Cost for the event is $65 per person. Dress is business casual. A cash bar will be available (liquor may not be brought into the facility). Directions can be found on the website at www.bellaseraranch.com.
