One arrested on drug charges

PALESTINE — One person was arrested on drug charges Wednesday after police responded to a call about illegal dumping.

Palestine police officers responded to a home in the 400 block of Hamlet Street in reference to illegal dumping and while at the location smelled a distinct odor of marijuana coming from the residence.

According to Palestine Police Department Sgt. James Muniz, after smelling the marijuana Cpl. Mat Kerr began investigating the possibility of drugs being at the location.  

After obtaining a search warrant, police conducted a search of the property during the noon hour.

Muniz said that during the search, officers found marijuana, crack cocaine and an assorted number of pills.

“All of the items will be taken to the DPS crime lab for testing,” he said.

One man was arrested and charged with several charges including manufacturing/delivery of a controlled substance penalty group 1 between 4 and 200 grams, a first degree felony;  manufacturing/delivery of controlled substance PG3 less than 28 grams, a state jail felony; and possession of marijuana between 2 and 4 ounces, a Class A misdemeanor.

A first degree felony carries a maximum punishment of 5 to 99 years or life in prison. A state jail felony carries a maximum punishment of two years in state jail. A Class A misdemeanor carries a maximum punishment of one year in the county jail.

Police would not release the name of the person arrested until the suspect has been arraigned.
