Woman arrested for assault, serving alcohol to minors

PALESTINE — A 38-year-old Palestine woman was behind bars Wednesday after authorities say she served alcohol to minors at a birthday party and then attacked another woman who questioned her behavior.

Rosharon Lummus, 38, of Palestine was arrested shortly after midnight Wednesday on charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, endangering a child and purchasing/furnishing alcohol to a minor, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

Authorities say Lummus provided Keystone beer to four minor children, including one as young as 12, at a birthday party for one of the children at her residence in the 700 block of CR 2150, southwest of the Palestine city limits.

A report on the incident indicated four minors were served alcohol. Three of the minors were ages 12, 13 and 14, while the age of the fourth minor was not listed on the report.

Taylor said his agency was contacted by a parent of one of the party-goers after she picked her daughter up from the party.

“They went to pick her up,” Taylor said. “The mother noticed the (13-year-old) child was intoxicated. When she confronts the lady who was arrested (Lummus)...the lady assaults her, punches her and hits her and then runs into the house and returns with a butcher knife.

“When she ran in the house and got the butcher knife,” the sheriff stated, “they (the 34-year-old alleged victim and her daughter) were able to get in the car and leave.”

Taylor said the alleged victim reported getting punched by Lummus “several times” and had “some redness and a scratch on her face,” in addition to “a puffy area around her left eye” and scrapes on both elbows.

The 13-year-old daughter of the assaulted woman was subsequently transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center by Emergency Medical Services where she was treated and released, according to the sheriff.

“She was intoxicated and gasping for air,” Taylor said, “and may have possibly had a seizure.”

The sheriff said authorities believe all four minors consumed alcohol, but was uncertain of the amount.

Taylor said officers recovered a “long wooden-handled kitchen knife” from the suspect’s residence.

The sheriff referred to the incident as “just a case of stupidity.

“What person furnishes alcohol to 13- and 14-year-olds?” Taylor stated.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, Lummus remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $80,000 set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Carl Davis, according to records.
