Longtime judge Link dies at 91

MONTALBA — Anderson County’s longest serving county judge, N.R. Link died Thursday after a long illness. He was 91.

In 1964 Link was appointed to fill the unexpired term of county judge Wayne Lawrence. Link held that position for 19 years.

Link was born June 3, 1918 near Montalba where he attended grade school. He graduated from Palestine High School in 1936, then worked his way through Sam Houston Teachers College by driving a truck, graduating in 1940.

After college Link worked as a vocational agriculture teacher at Garden City High School in Glasscock County until he joined the Navy in 1941. He was commissioned as a senior lieutenant and was trained in submarine warfare as an underwater sound specialist.

In 1942 he married his wife Gwendoll Ellis of Frankston and after leaving the service owned and operated a sawmill. He also served as a coordinator for Anderson County Vocational School. He served as a deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office and as Anderson County’s Veteran Service Officer.

After being named county judge, Link was active in the State County Judges and Commissioners Association and Texas Department of Transportation.

Services for Link will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Bailey & Foster Chapel. A visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. tonight at Bailey & Foster Funeral Home.

He also was active in for the regions water resources and was a member of and served as chairman of Tennessee Colony Lake Area Improvement Association, which covered Anderson, Navarro, Freestone and Henderson counties which developed the Trinity River’s water basins.
