Quebe sisters to be at Lovelady Old Gym
Lovelady Old Gym will be hosting the Western Swing sensation The Quebe Sisters Band Friday starting at 6:30 p.m.
“Those girls can really play,” said Norma Dell Jones, a Lovelady Old Gym committee member. “Everybody ought to come out and listen to them.”
The Quebe Sisters Band, made up of Grace, Sophia and Hulda Quebe along with world champion fiddler Joey McKenzie on the guitar and Drew Phelps on the upright bass play a blend of western swing in the Bob Wills fashion, with a little jazz, swing and vintage western music thrown into the mix. Sometimes, they even throw in a little bluegrass and some Texas fiddling.
The three-part harmony they employ with their music also brings back memories from when radio was king.
Chris Richards of The Washington Post wrote of The Quebe Sisters Band, “Hearing the Quebe Sisters sing is nothing short of mesmerizing — perhaps because they make music that most have only experienced via grainy black-and-white TV screens or crackling vinyl. Imagine the angelic Andrews Sisters (of “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy” fame) singing in top form — and then ripping into a nimble fiddle breakdown.”
Jones said tickets can be purchased at several locations around the Houston County area including Crockett Bank, Spring-Mar Grocery located on Texas 19 between Crockett and Lovelady, Broxon’s Hardware in Lovelady or Lovelady State Bank.
For those who can’t make it to those locations, Jones said give her a call at (936)636-2267 or (936)545-6680 and she will set aside tickets and will provide them at the front door.
Tickets for the event are $15.
