Gas line erupts in Tucker

Authorities say no one was injured after a gas line erupted in the Tucker area Sunday afternoon.

Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said his agency was contacted around 3:55 p.m. Sunday regarding the gas line eruption which occurred near the intersection of CR 2133 and CR 2130, approximately 1/2 mile south of U.S. 79.

Four families living on CR 2133 were evacuated from their homes for between 60 and 90 minutes, and the gas line was shut off by representatives of Atmos Energy, which owns the line, by 5:08 p.m. Sunday, the sheriff stated.

“No persons were injured, and there was no property damage,” Taylor said. “Gas like that can be very dangerous if a cloud was to float into a house or a low lying area and a car drove into it.”

Representatives of the Tucker and Elkhart volunteer fire departments were among those responding to the call, in addition to sheriff’s Cpl. Lee Duren and Anderson County Precinct 2 Constable Doug Lightfoot, according to the sheriff.

“They quickly set up a perimeter and shut down U.S. 79 at (Texas) 294 and U.S. 79 at (FM) 645,” Taylor said. “It also shut down the railroad tracks there in Tucker.”

Authorities cleared the area by around 5:30 p.m. Sunday, he added.

As of Monday morning, the sheriff said authorities were uncertain what caused the line to erupt.

“Those things sometimes just bust,” Taylor said. “Fortunately, no one was injured.”
