Local man jailed on multiple charges

PALESTINE — A 28-year-old Palestine man was arrested Tuesday on multiple charges after authorities say they found drugs, a firearm and other illegal items in his possession.

Kenneth Bryan Joyce, 28, of Palestine was arrested on multiple charges Tuesday night after an Anderson County sheriff’s deputy pulled him over for a traffic violation, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

Anderson County sheriff’s deputy Johnny Gordon stopped a 1999 Ford F-350 pickup operated by Joyce at 9:22 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of East Palestine Avenue and Fowler Street for an expired registration sticker, according to the sheriff.

Joyce was placed under arrest when the officer discovered he did not have liability insurance and was driving without a license, Taylor added.

During his inventory of the suspect’s vehicle, Gordon found a loaded Model 1911 Colt 45 pistol between the driver’s and passenger’s seat “wrapped in a rag,” according to the sheriff.

“There were no serial numbers on it,” Taylor explained. “It had been sanded down.”

After transporting Joyce to the Anderson County Jail, Gordon found drugs stuffed in the back seat in the area where the suspect had been sitting, according to the sheriff.

“There was a plastic bag stuffed behind the seat that had a syringe,” Taylor said. “In this plastic bag, there were two smaller bags.”

Inside the bags were two Soma pills; approximately 2.3 grams of methamphetamine including packaging; and a small amount of marijuana, according to Taylor.

The sheriff explained that deputies search their vehicles prior to each shift as a standard practice to make sure there are no items or contraband.

Joyce has been charged with possession of a controlled substance 1-to-4 grams; unlawfully carrying a weapon; tampering with identification; possession of a dangerous drug; possession of marijuana under 2 ounces; possession of drug paraphernalia; driving while license invalid; and no liability insurance, according to Taylor.

As of late Wednesday afternoon, Joyce remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $54,200 set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd, according to records.

Joyce also faces a $367 fine, records further indicated.

A 27-year-old male passenger in Joyce’s vehicle was released at the scene.
