Relay for Life event to benefit cancer research

PALESTINE — A week from now, hundreds of area residents will gather to celebrate cancer survivors and caregivers and remember the loved ones that have lost the battle to cancer at the Anderson County Relay for Life on Friday, May 4.

“We would love for every one to come out and enjoy the festivities, celebrate our cancer survivors and experience American Cancer Society Relay For Life,” Anderson County Relay for Life committee member Mary Kolstad said. “This is a fun community and family event in a safe environment.”

Relay for Life will start with the opening ceremonies at 7 p.m. on Westwood ISD’s Panther Stadium with the luminaria ceremony at sundown and several activities in between and after for the following 12 hours, finishing with a closing ceremony at 6:30 a.m. Saturday, May 5.

“Our cancer survivors will kick-off Relay For Life at 7 p.m. walking the first lap together while we celebrate them from the sidelines —it is awesome and very emotional,” Kolstad said. “We will be honored by the Vietnam Veterans of Dogwood Chapter 991 as they present the American flag.”

Forty-six Relay for Life teams have worked all year raising funds through various fund-raisers and sharing their cancer stories throughout the community.

“The Relay Committee has worked endless hours this year and will have an amazing Relay For Life for Anderson County. We could not have Relay For Life without the teams’ and volunteers’ passion to work to find a cure,” Kolstad said.

Each team will be fundraising at their campsite on the football field during Relay for Life with all kinds of foods, drinks, bake sales and silent auctions, and selling items such as T-shirts, jewelry, candles, birdhouses, toys, trees, ice cream, and more. There will be drawings for a variety of items.

“The teams camping out all night will be very entertained with games, contests, lots of activities for children and great music all night,” Kolstad said.

Relay for Life benefits the American Cancer Society.

“We appreciate our event sponsor Texas Oncology and our T-shirt underwriter Palestine Regional Medical Center and for numerous in-kind contributions to our teams from businesses and individuals,” Kolstad said.
