PALESTINE —
A Texas Hunter Education Class will be taught in Palestine July 30 through Aug. 1.
“We try to do one big class once a year here. We wait until summer baseball is over and before the two-a-days at the schools start so the young people won’t have a conflict worrying about being at practice or interfering with their studies,” certified hunter education instructor Carey McKinney said. “This time of the year works better for most people.”
The class will be offered from 5:30 to 9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, July 30-Aug. 1 at Room 103-A at the Anderson County Courthouse Annex, 703 N. Mallard St. in Palestine.
“A hunter education class is required for anybody born after Sept. 2, 1971 to be able to hunt in the state of Texas,” McKinney said. “The mere fact that hunter education classes are being taught statewide have reduced the number of hunter-related accidents, along with the other safety courses offered.”
Students must be at least 9 years of age or older to receive certification and it is good for life.
“We have a number of parents who will come with their youngsters to the class,” McKinney said. “Anybody who has the opportunity to hunt out of state also needs this class.”
The 10 hours of required instruction will be spread over the three nights.
A state fee of $15 (cash) will be charged at registration and will go to the Texas Parks & Wildlife Department. Registration will be at 5:30 p.m. Monday, July 30 at the door. All three classes must be attended to receive a certificate.
“They don’t have to pre-register for this class, we do that for everybody at the beginning of class on the first day,” McKinney said.
Anyone born after Sept. 2, 1971 must have a Hunter Safety Certificate to hunt in Texas.
Items to bring to the class include Social Security number, No. 2 pencil, highlighter and/or pen.
Other certified volunteer instructors for the Texas Parks & Wildlife class include Glen Hinshaw and Game Warden Karen Gray.
