PALESTINE —
The Palestine Community Theatre will bring audiences three weekends full of fun telling the timeless story of the world-famous candy man and his quest to find an heir in the “Willy Wonka” musical at the historic Texas Theater.
Based on Gene Wilder’s Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory (1971), the play, “Willy Wonka,” brings the story to the stage, including favorite songs such as “Pure Imagination” and “Candy Man.”
Roald Dahl’s 1964 book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” has become a cult classic and now is one of the most beloved titles in the history of children’s cinema.
“PCT is excited to bring this classic to one of the oldest and most beautiful theaters in East Texas,” a PCT news release said.
Show dates and times are July 20-22, July 27-29 and August 3-5. Friday and Saturday performances begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday performances begin at 2 p.m.
An opening night gala featuring a wine and cheese reception will start at 6:30 p.m. The gala will be catered by Chef Simon of Sabor a Pasión Country House, Bed and Breakfast and Bistro. Granny Muffin Wines also be on tap at the Texas Theater during the reception.
Tickets for the “Willy Wonka” show are $12 for adults for all performances and $8 for children ages 4 to 18. Tickets can be purchased in advance at Education Unlimited, 1917 Crockett Rd., Dogwood Diner, 402 E. Palestine Ave. or the Palestine Area Chamber of Commerce, 401 W. Main St., 903-729-6066.
“Willy Wonka” has been made possible through the support of Inner Wisdom Inspired in Fairfield.
In conjunction with the show, the Anderson County Blankets and Bears Children’s Fund will hold a blankets and bears drive prior to each performance starting July 21 with a collection and information booth set up in the theater’s lobby. The Blankets and Bears organization provides blankets and stuffed animals to children during times of loss, injury, grief and or trauma through various agencies including public safety officials, shelters, hospitals and certain not-for-profit organizations assisting children in their time of need.
The Texas Theater is located at 213 W. Crawford St. in Palestine. For more information, visit http://www.thetexastheater.com/
