PALESTINE —
Family-owned and operated lumber yard chain, Harry’s Building Materials, has closed its Palestine location at 3824 W. Oak St. after 14 years of business.
The store, which opened in Palestine in 1998, was officially closed to the public on July 31. The last day of work for its estimated 20 employees was Wednesday.
Harry’s Building Materials was founded in Rusk in 1955 by Harry S. and Magoline Tosh. Their son Harry R. “Bobby” Tosh purchased his father’s interest in the business in 1974, when Harry’s was incorporated and Bobby named president.
Since that time, Harry's Building Material Inc. expanded to five stores — Jacksonville in 1983, Troup in 1990, Nacogdoches in 1992 and Palestine in 1998.
The first Harry’s Building Materials location in Palestine was located at 3910 U.S. 79 North where Rucker Equipment now operates. When Palestine Builder’s Supply closed its doors about seven years ago, Harry’s Building Materials purchased the property and moved its location to 3824 W. Oak St.
The company has over 30 delivery trucks, a door unit manufacturing facility, “Your Home” by Harry’s Show Room (in Jacksonville) and more than 100 employees.
Attempts made to contact Harry’s vice president Robby Tosh and/or a local store manager for comment were not successful as of presstime Wednesday.
