PALESTINE —
In an effort to lessen the burden on economically hurting families, the Palestine Junior Service League will host its 12th annual Back to School Fair from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday at Southside Baptist Church (1500 Crockett Rd.) in Palestine.
Through its effort, the PJSL has been able to help the community for the last several years — providing backpacks full of school supplies for public school children, as well as free hair cuts and dental, vision and spinal checks.
“The PJSL raised money at our annual gala that made it possible for us to host the Back to School Fair,” PJSL spokeswoman Laura Scroggins said. “With these funds, we were able to order over 1,000 backpacks and enough supplies to fill them.”
To be eligible to receive school supplies, children must be 5 to 17 years of age or entering grades K-12 only for the 2012-13 school year. Children must be present to receive the supplies.
Families eligible for AFDC/food stamps or the free or reduced-price federal lunch program will qualify for free school supplies for their school-aged children who are registered to attend public school in Anderson County.
“Not only do we provide the backpacks, some supplies and various services, we also enhance the event with some fun activities,” Scroggins said. “We will have a bounce house, face painting, balloons, snowcones, popcorn and more.”
Parents will need to bring the following: proof of residency, utility bill or mail postmarked June or July 2012; parent or legal guardian picture identification; each child's Social Security card or birth certificate and case number for TANF, AFDC or food stamps.
