PALESTINE —
A pair of suspects led Palestine police and other agencies on a pursuit Thursday night which ended when the alleged culprits wrecked their vehicle west of Elkhart.
As of late Friday afternoon, Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said Joshua Knapp, 20, of Palestine and Brittani Britton, 17, of Athens remained at large after fleeing from police Thursday night.
The vehicle pursuit ended when Knapp and Britton wrecked “a silver truck” on Texas 294, west of Elkhart and near the intersection of CR 130, around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, according to the sheriff.
“They wrecked out and fled on foot,” Taylor said.
Shortly before 11 p.m., authorities were requesting that a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter respond to the area to help assist in searching for the suspects.
Taylor said he believed officers with the Palestine Police Department, in addition to a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety, pursued the truck out of Palestine and south on U.S. 287 to Elkhart after receiving a report the vehicle had been stolen from the Westwood area.
Unknown to police at the time, the sheriff said his agency was simultaneously investigating a residential burglary occurring Thursday on Private Road 6421, north of Palestine, in which Knapp and Britton are believed to be suspects.
A number of firearms were reported stolen during the burglary which allegedly occurred between 5:10 p.m. Thursday and 8:40 p.m. Thursday, according to Taylor.
One of the firearms believed to have been stolen in the earlier burglary was recovered from the wrecked truck, according to the sheriff.
“He (Knapp) is known to steal guns,” Taylor said.
The complainant in the burglary was able to provide a description of the potential suspect's vehicle after observing it being operated in a reckless fashion en route to their residence Thursday night.
Taylor said the burglarized residence had damage to a back door, but that entry was believed to have been gained through a window.
Efforts to reach a representative of the Palestine Police Department Friday for comment were unsuccessful.
