School board election filings end; Three districts to hold elections

PALESTINE — Filings for the expiring terms on the school boards for Palestine, Westwood and Elkhart independent school districts concluded Friday, with three contested races in PISD and one contested race each in Westwood and Elkhart school districts.

School board elections will be held from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 11.

Three Palestine ISD board incumbents have filed for re-election including: Dana Staples, Place 3; Rickey Ferguson, Place 4; and Janie Sepulveda, Place 5. Candidates running against them include JoJo Dickerson, Place 3; Kenneth R. Jordan, Place 4; and Mitchell W. Jordan, Place 5.

A drawing for position on the ballot will be held next week.

At Palestine ISD, early voting will begin Monday, April 29 and will continue through Tuesday, May 7. On Monday and Tuesday, May 6-7, the Palestine ISD Administrative Office will remain open for early voting until 5:30 p.m.

At Westwood ISD, incumbents Theresa Bambeck (District 3) and Carolyn Booker (District 7) have filed for re-election, and will run unopposed for their seats in May. Incumbent Kim Crawford will face candidate Mike Bentley for the District 1 seat. Crawford was appointed to the WISD Board of Trustees in December 2012, filling a spot vacated by longtime school board member Carey McKinney.

At Elkhart ISD, incumbents Harold Holloway (Position 1) and Paul Barnett (Position 2) have filed for re-election, and will run unopposed for their seats in May. Incumbent Steve Ham will face candidate Gary McShan for Position 3.

Early voting will be held Monday, April 29 through Tuesday, May 7 for Elkhart and Westwood ISDs as well.

    Steps of Faith Dance Center will hold its annual production at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Palestine Civic Center.

  • Traffic stop leads to arrest

    A Palestine man remained in jail Monday on drug-related charges following a suspicious vehicle stop in Anderson County on Saturday.
    According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, while on patrol in the early morning hours on Saturday, deputy Johnny Gorden saw a suspicious vehicle sitting on the side of U.S. 287  between Palestine and Elkhart.
