'Duck Dash for Cancer' benefits Relay for Life team

PALESTINE — More than 300 plastic pink ducks were raced down the Old Town Creek Saturday for the inaugural “Duck Dash for Cancer” fund-raiser.

The event, sponsored by Holiday Inn Express, benefited the Relay for Life team Wendy’s Wings.

“We raced 362 ducks for 14 prizes worth about $3,000,” Wendy Wings team leader Lynn Hill said Saturday.

Wendy’s Wings team honors a Holiday Inn Express employee who died three years ago and now has more than 20 members.

“We started our team because of Wendy. The team is put together in memory of her,” Hill said during the Anderson County Relay for Life event in May. “But personally, I have lost a lot of family members to cancer. My best friend is a survivor. My husband Stefan has lost his mother and brother to cancer. My husband is at severe risk of getting cancer because he is a Vietnam veteran exposed to Agent Orange. We do this in hopes that we can help fight cancer.”

The numbered ducks were collected at the finish line by Holiday Inn Express General Manager Carroll Sigman, a cancer survivor.

“The top prize was a hometown vacation package,” Hill said.

Grand prize for the winning duck went to Jennifer Reece, who won a night in the jacuzzi suite at Holiday Inn Express, dinner at Sabor a Pasion Country House & Bistro, two movie passes from Schulman Theatres and wine from Sweet Dreams Winery.

Others winning prizes included:

• Tiffany Chamberlain — one-hour photo session plus CD from Susie Wolf Photography; Dinner for two from Bishop’s Brisket House plus movie passes

• Jennifer Reece — five sauna sessions from B’s Hive of Therapy; $25 certificate to 5 Enterprises mobile car detail

• Troy Antley — Lamp from Davis Furniture

• Virginia Wheeler — Accessory set from Blake Furniture

• Gene Chavers — $25 gift certificate to Giovanni’s

• Lynn Hill — $25 certificate to Just Right Fashion

The band Yesteryear (made up of Jim Orr and Cecil Crutcher) donated their time to play music and do karaoke at the event in honor of member Jim Orr’s daughter Seanelle, who is currently battling cancer. Oxbow Bakery donated the use of the park.
