Dogwood Jamboree talent search auditions set March 9

PALESTINE — Any young person under age 18 who plays an instrument or sings classic country music is invited to audition for the Dogwood Jamboree Talent Search.

The talent search auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, March 9 at the Palestine Civic Center.

Three young artists will be chosen from the auditions for the Dogwood Jamboree “A Country Connection” show on March 23.

Those interested in auditions will need to call 903-723-6291 for an application and appointment time. Applications will not be taken after Wednesday, March 7.

At each show, three contestants vie to win the talent competition. Seventy–five percent of the decision determining the winner of the show is based on voting by the audience and the remaining 25 percent of the decision will be made by three judges that night. Each show winner advances to the finals in December. The young person named “Artist of the Year” receives a cash award, certificate and a $500 photo opportunity donated by Lee Loveless Photography.

Taylor Heard from Mount Pleasant won the title “Jamboree Artist of the Year” in December 2012. Previous “Jamboree Artist of the Year” winners include Kim Kendricks in 2011 and Madison Fuller (Miss Teen Texas) of Fairfield in 2010.

“Numerous young people participated in the auditions held last year. Some of the young performers who have appeared on previous shows have advanced their careers with major recording labels,” Dogwood Jamboree Producer Dan Manuel said. “We are so proud of these young people who love country music and those who are so talented. We believe in young people and it is great to see these young people off the streets and  making an effort to improve their lives by participating in events similar to the Jamboree.”

There is no entry fee for auditioning.

“The judges have great difficulty in  choosing only three young people for the show each time. The judges are often faced with some tough decisions,” Manuel said.

During the March 23 Dogwood Jamboree show set during the second weekend of the Dogwood Trails Celebration in Palestine, Lori Bishop and the Bishop Sisters will perform on stage. Others performing include Steve Carpenter, Mandy Seale, W. J. Copeland, Taylor Heard, Kimmy Hendricks as well as regular artists Joe Hancock, Sissy Perry and Manuel.

Providing comic relief will be Dogwood Jamboree regular Sandy “Flo” Singleterry.

Sandy “Flo” Singleterry  will be on hand with her usual antics for the performance on stage that evening.

“We have a lot of visitors and tour groups coming for the show that night. This will be an unforgettable performance,” Manuel said.

Advance tickets are $12.50 and will not go on sale until Thursday. Tickets will be available at  Cavender’s, Dogwood Diner, Hometown Pharmacy and Bishop’s BBQ in the Palestine Mall. Advanced tickets also will be available by calling 903-729-7080, 903-723-6291 or 903-724-2556.

Advanced tickets can be purchased through 5 p.m. March 22, after that time, tickets must be purchased at the door for $15.
