School supply giveaway events scheduled

PALESTINE — A local car club has joined other organizations in offering assistance to area students via free school supply events this week.

The Congo Truck/Car Club will hold its Back to School event at 5 p.m. Sunday at Reagan Park for students in grades K-5.

“We will continue until all the supplies are gone,” Congo Truck Club spokesperson Garland Wilson said. “A child must be present to receive the school supplies.”

Greenbrier Nursing and Rehab, located at 2404 Texas 155 in Palestine, will hold a free Back to School Picnic from 4 to 7 p.m. today. Families are invited to stop by with their children for hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks, snowcones, cotton candy and a bounce house. Several backpacks filled with school supplies will be given away (the child must be present to receive).

Solaris Hospice is helping Greenbrier with the event. For details, call Aja Jones at Greenbrier at 903-729-6024.

Cornerstone Worship Center will hold a free Back to School Bash from 6 to 8 p.m. this Saturday — giving away backpacks, school supplies and offering free haircuts for children. Other free activities will include a bounce house, cake walk and games for the children.

“We want the community to know that we are here and want to help. We know it can be hard for parents during the back-to-school time,” said Amanda Malone, who pastors the church with her husband, David.

The church was given 70 backpacks full of school supplies from the Palestine Junior Service League to give away. The backpacks are separated with supplies for elementary and junior and high school students.

“Once we go through those backpacks, we also have school supplies to give away that the church has collected,” Malone said. “It may not be all of the supplies needed on school supply lists teachers have provided, but it will definitely be a good start.”

At least three hair stylists had confirmed to participate in the Back to School Bash, coordinated by Sondra Bell of Hairtique.

No proof of income is needed for the Cornerstone Worship Center event, the children just need to be school-aged and show up with the parents.

“If you know anyone who could use the help, send them to us on Saturday,” Malone said.
