PALESTINE —
A 26-year-old Texas Department of Criminal Justice employee was killed early Monday as a result of injuries sustained in a single-vehicle wreck on U.S. 287 in northern Anderson County.
Hakeem Mohammed, 26, of Dallas died at the scene of the wreck which occurred around 3 a.m. Monday when the vehicle in which he was a passenger struck a pair of horses on U.S. 287, just southeast of FM 2706, in Bethel, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Injured in the wreck was Adedap Adekunle, 41, who lists a Philadelphia address, and is employed by the TDCJ, according to the DPS.
“The vehicle (a 2003 Hyundai SGX) was traveling southbound on U.S. 287 (operated by Adekunle) and struck two horses that were in the road,” the DPS spokesperson said.
A Tyler-based DPS spokesperson told the Herald-Press that Adekunle was in “stable” condition at Palestine Regional Medical Center with head lacerations following the wreck.
Both the vehicle’s occupants were wearing seatbelts, according to the DPS.
The DPS spokesperson said the horses were also killed.
DPS Trooper Bradley Sutton investigated the wreck.
