ACSO continues to investigate assault that led to school lockdown

PALESTINE — Anderson County Sheriff’s Office officials are still investigating a morning dispute that led to the brief lockdown of Westwood Elementary School on Tuesday.

According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, search warrants were served on a residence on County Road 428, located near the campus, in order to discover evidence of narcotics and of the assault involving multiple suspects.

“In the search, investigators found a small amount of meth in the house,” the sheriff said.

Two arrests have been made as a result — that of 28-year-old Hunter Cole Sheridan, who has already bonded out of jail for the charge of possession of marijuana in a drug free zone; and of 34-year-old Michael Lance Collins, who was arrested late Wednesday afternoon for possession of a controlled substance (PG1) in a drug free zone.

“Collins was injured in Tuesday’s altercation and was treated and released at the local hospital,” Taylor said. “We still don’t know about his involvement in the assault — whether he was a victim or a suspect.”

Taylor reported Tuesday that during the altercation between multiple males at the county residence, one of those involved was bitten by a pit bull and then ran from the scene onto the Westwood Elementary School campus, leading to the lockdown.

While police responded to reports of shots fired, Taylor later reported that was not the case and that students were not in any danger.

“The school did a great job in responding,” the sheriff said. “They did what they should have done in that kind of situation.”

The dog was quarantined and remains at the animal shelter for observation.

ACSO investigators Sgt. Ryan Tolliver and Sgt. Brian Chason are continuing to investigate the case, Taylor said.
