County, cities receive March sales tax payments

PALESTINE — Texas Comptroller Susan Combs recently reported that state sales tax revenue in February was $2.08 billion, up 3.7 percent compared to February 2012.

“Sales tax revenues continue to grow, but at a more moderate pace compared to recent months,” Combs said. “The latest increase was led by receipts from the construction and restaurant sectors. Collections from other major sectors such as oil and natural gas-related businesses and manufacturing remain at high levels.”

Combs sent cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts their March local sales tax allocations totaling $531.3 million, up 12.2 percent compared to March 2012.

Texas cities received $348.7 million in March 2013 allocations — up 11.5 percent compared to the same month last year and up 6.7 percent this year.

Only one of Anderson County’s three municipalities — the City of Frankston — showed a $2,000 (14.84 percent) increase in the March 2013 payment of $15,467 over the 2012 payment of $14,467.

Frankston’s 2013 payments-to-date also rose — increasing $4,270 to $51,162 so far in 2013 compared to $46,892 as of March 2012.

Palestine’s payment of $387,374 dropped $26,252 compared to their 2012 March payment of $413,626. Payments-to-date decreased 3.46 percent, dropping from $1,522,198 in March 2012 to $1,469,383 so far this year.

The City of Elkhart’s March payment dropped 20.67 percent — decreasing $1,970 to a total payment of $7,558 compared to last year’s March payment of  $9,528. The city’s payments-to-date increased though — rising $19,878 (68.79 percent), from 28,892 in March of 2012 to $48,770 so far this year.

Texas’ more than 250 counties saw March allocations of $34.2 million — an 8.8 percent increase compared to March 2012 and a year to date increase of 10.4 percent.

Anderson County’s payment increase as well, with a 16.55 percent increase (or $27,918) in its March 2013 allocation payment of $196,526 compared to the March 2012 payment of $168,608.

The county’s 2013 payments-to-date showed a slight 4.28 percent decrease, with 2013 payments-to-date totaling $607,304 compared to the March 2012 payments-to-date of $634,515.

The sales tax figures represent January sales reported by monthly tax filers as well as sales by businesses that report tax on a quarterly or annual basis.
