PALESTINE —
Palestine and Anderson County will commemorate National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day next week with a ceremony at the Peace Officers’ Memorial located at the intersection of Avenue A and West Oak Street in downtown Palestine.
The ceremony is set to begin at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 15.
The National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day was created in October 1961 when Congress asked the president to designate May 15 each year to honor peace officers.
National Police Week is traditionally held the same calendar week as the Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and begins Sunday.
Tens of thousands of law enforcement officers from around the world will converge on Washington, D.C. next week to participate in a number of planned events which honor those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor and Palestine Police Chief Robert Herbert will serve as speakers at next week’s local event.
“Over 170 officers died in the line of duty throughout the nation last year,” Taylor said. “Eleven of those officers were from Texas.”
Vietnam Veterans of America, Dogwood Chapter #991 will present the colors at the local ceremony, while Frankston Police Chief Darren Goodman is slated to sing “Amazing Grace.”
The Rev. Rick Dees, pastor of Westwood Baptist Church, will give the opening and closing prayers.
Refreshments will be served at the conclusion of the brief ceremony.
Local residents and citizens are welcome to attend.
