PALESTINE —
For the first time in six years, enrollment in the Palestine Independent School District has reached 3,300 students, according to the district’s top official.
During Monday’s school board meeting, PISD Superintendent Jason Marshall told trustees that the district currently has “right at 3,300 students districtwide,” saying the district had not hit that figure since the 2006-07 school year.
“We’re very happy with where our enrollment is right now,” Marshall said during Monday’s meeting. “On top of that, our Career and Technology numbers are significantly up, so that means our WADA (Weighted Average Daily Attendance) goes up even more.”
Marshall also told trustees that a total of 200 students in grades 10 through 12 at Palestine High School were currently taking a total of 370 “dual credit” college courses.
The PISD’s spike in enrollment comes as all projects in a $64 million bond project approved by the district’s voters in May 2009 have essentially been completed.
The crown jewel of the bond election which accounted for roughly half of the bond’s total -- the new Palestine High School -- opened its doors to students on the first day of school last month.
Some of the actions taken by the board Monday included:
• APPROVED softball field renovations in Phase II of the Design Build Project.
• APPROVED minutes of meetings on July 16, 2012 and Aug. 20, 2012.
• APPROVED August bills.
• APPROVED financial, monthly investment and tax collection reports.
• APPROVED budget amendments.
• APPROVED donations.
• APPROVED 2012-13 Emergency Operations Plan.
• APPROVED 2012-13 School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) Committee members.
• APPROVED remaining board meeting dates for 2012.
• APPROVED AgriLife Extension Adjunct Faculty Agreement for 2012-13.
• APPROVED Student Transfer Tuition Fee for 2012-13 school year.
• APPROVED Policy FNF (Local) Revisions Students Rights and Responsibilities: Interrogation and Searches.
• APPROVED professional personnel.
