The Palestine Young Professionals Network will host a Fall Social on Friday, Sept. 21 at Elmwood Gardens.
“So far, we have sold around 50 tickets. We’re hoping to have between 50 to 100 turn out for the event,” PYPN spokesman Dr. Zac Leslie said Thursday. “It should be a fun night for everyone and a way to meet other young professionals.”
Texas country music artist Mike Ryan will provide live music and the event will be catered by Bishop’s Brisket House. The event is sponsored by Palestine Economic Development Corp. and Ben E Keith.
The Palestine Young Professionals Network is an organization that was developed for those interested in serving and shaping the local community. Requirements for membership are: 40 years of age or below and an associate’s degree or higher; or a business owner.
“You don’t have to be a member to come out to the fall social. We are accepting prospective members. If you are interested and fit the criteria for membership, we are happy to invite you,” Leslie said. “This is going to be a really relaxed, comfortable evening. It’s an inclusive group, we want to be welcoming.”
The Palestine Young Professionals Network started in Palestine about five or six years ago, after a City of Palestine and Palestine Economic Development Corp.-funded study called the Angelou Report suggested forming a young professionals group to assist with retention as one of its strategies for workforce development.
“The report found that Palestine had limited social outlets for young professionals and the idea was that the organization might help fill this need,” Leslie said.
The Palestine Young Professionals Network has three branches — social, government and service.
The upcoming fall social is an outreach of the social committee. Leslie said the group hopes to do two to four social events every year.
As chair of the service committee, Leslie said the Palestine Young Professionals Network already has a group of volunteers planning to help with the National Night Out event planned Oct. 2 at Reagan Park, specifically working with the Champions for Children organization.
During the weekend of Oct. 20, volunteers with the Palestine Young Professionals Network will help with city cleanup in advance of the Hot Pepper Festival, including helping with downtown cleaning and the general city cleanup done semi-annually.
“Whether it’s community service, a fun social or having a voice in our local government, the more people who get involved, the more influence we are going to have,” Leslie said.
Leslie said the Palestine Young Professionals Network has the potential to make a difference in their community.
“I have passion for this group because it can help shape the future of our community. I don’ t want to look back in 20 or 30 years and have regrets that we could have done something. We have the opportunity to shape things now and see our community flourish,” Leslie said.
Tickets for the fall social are $10 and must be pre-purchased for catering purposes. For information or to purchase tickets, call Megan Hasty at 903-391-6644 or Brittany Leslie at 903-948-0845.
Doors will open for cocktails and mingling at 6:30 p.m. with food to be served around 7 p.m.
“We also plan to have games and activities including a washer toss tournament,” Leslie said. “Dee Dee Turnage and Elmwood Gardens has been really great to work with and we appreciate their help so much. We believe this will be a great event.”
Elmwood Gardens is located north of Palestine on FM 315 on CR 2908. For more direction assistance, visit www.elmwoodgardens.com or call Elmwood Gardens at 903-549-2716.
