PALESTINE —
Anderson County sheriff’s authorities are investigating the weekend burglary of a Cayuga store which they say resulted in a total of approximately $4,000 in damage and lost goods.
Anderson County sheriff’s deputy Jeff Taylor was dispatched to the M.C. Store in the 21000 block of U.S. 287 North in Cayuga around 2:30 a.m. Saturday “in reference to a burglary that had just occurred,” according to Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
“The owner of the store (who lives adjacent to his business) had heard the alarm go of and had walked across the yard and observed a dark green four-wheeler parked out in front of the store,” Black explained. “He saw two white males -- one with numerous tattoos on his upper body -- exiting the store. The owner did not try to intervene as he saw one of the white males had a weapon on his hip.
“The suspects got on the four-wheeler and rode south on (U.S.) 287 towards FM 59,” the chief deputy continued. “The owner then went to the front door (of the store) and found the front door had been shattered. They threw a concrete block through the front door.”
Upon entering the store, the owner discovered approximately 25 cartons of cigarettes missing, according to Black.
Damage to the store was estimated at $2,000, while the total value of the stolen items also was estimated at $2,000, the chief deputy added.
Black said Anderson County sheriff’s Sgt. Ryan Tolliver, who is the case’s lead investigator, and sheriff’s Capt. Jay Russell returned to the scene Wednesday to perform additional investigation.
Anyone providing information leading to the arrest of a suspect or suspects in the burglary may be eligible to receive a reward of up to $1,000 from Anderson County Crimestoppers.
Crimestoppers can be contacted by calling (903) 729-TIPS (8477).
