PALESTINE —
Filings for the four expiring terms on the Palestine City Council continue this week, with two candidates filing to run for the mayor spot and one incumbent council member filing for re-election to their seat on the council.
The filing period for the May 11 city council general election began on Jan. 30 and will continue through Friday, March 1.
According to Palestine City Secretary Janelle Williams, there are four spots on the council expiring this May, including that of mayor Bob Herrington, and three city council seats — District 2, District 4 and District 6, held by council members Vernon Denmon Jr., James H. Yelverton and Steve Presley, respectively.
Filing for the mayor’s seat, so far, are current District 5 Councilmember Therrell Thomas and local businessman Timothy Triplett.
Herrington recently announced that he will not run for reelection.
Council member Steve Presley is the only incumbent to file for reelection so far.
The term of office for these positions is two years, from May 2013 to May 2015.
