PALESTINE —
The Anderson County Master Gardeners’ annual tree sale will be held from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (or until sold out) on Saturday in the parking lot behind the Federal Building at the corner of Oak and Sycamore streets in Palestine.
This year’s selection includes some old favorites, as well as some new ones.
In addition to white and pink dogwoods, the Master Gardeners will again be offering the double red “Knock Out” and the double pink “Belinda’s Dream” roses — both of which are black spot and root rot nematode resistant and thrive in warm weather.
Crape myrtles offered include the white Natchez, with large white flowers and cinnamon exfoliating bark; the Red Rocket, with long-lasting very red blooms, high drought tolerance and mildew resistance; and the Tuscarora, watermelon pink with gray bark and red-orange fall foliage.
For the first time this year, the sale also will include the Oak Leaf Hydrangea, a plant native to the United States that gets its name from the shape of the leaves. Another addition is the “Mock Orange” or “English” dogwood which blooms with creamy-white flowers.
Other offerings include the Red Flowering Quince and the Esperanza or Yellow Bells, Bottlebrush, Dwarf Pomegranate and Loropetalum.
Pre-orders for the annual tree sale will be accepted by calling Shirley at 903-549-2450 or Brenda at 903-723-2214. Pre-sales orders will be tagged with customers’ names and may be picked up from 1 to 5 p.m. Friday at the Federal Building Parking lot.
Preordered trees not picked up and paid for by noon Saturday will be offered for sale to others. Those who wish to purchase trees for later pickup may have the trees held until 4:30 p.m. Saturday, when the sale is over.
The Anderson County Master Gardeners also will be available on Saturday to answer plant questions. There will be information on some weeds and turf grasses and on planting dogwood and crape myrtles. Soil sample kits also will be available.
All of the proceeds from the tree sale will go back to the community in the form of seminars, demonstrations, talks and community gardens.
In the event of severe weather, the sale will be rescheduled for the following weekend at the same location.
