PALESTINE —
Almost a dozen cats remain and await adoption at the local BARC the Humane Society animal shelter after the seizure of 37 felines from a Palestine mobile home on Aug. 15.
“We have adopted three of them — two Siamese and one of the (two) Russian blues,” BARC board member Brenda Beazley said Thursday. “Several (of the 23 we had) became sick and had to be put to sleep, so we have 11 left for adoption.”
The cats are available for adoption or fostering, Beazley said. Several of them were neutered on Thursday by Dr. Karen Stone, and the shelter hopes this will increase their chances of finding a home.
“We have had lots of people come out to look,” she said. “No one has wanted to foster but adoption is really better for the cats.”
A special adoption rate of $30 (which includes vaccinations and spay/neutering) is being offered for the specific cats taken in the seizure.
Those interested in adopting or fostering the cats (up to groups of three for as many as three months) are asked to contact BARC at 903-729-8074 or visit the shelter, located on Armory Road behind the Department of Public Safety, from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 to 4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.
“Those wishing to foster the cats will be evaluated and a home visit will be conducted,” Beazley said. “They must have a separate area to acclimate the cat and be willing to bring the cat back.
“We are just overwhelmed trying to care for them and want to get them into good homes.”
On Aug. 15, City of Palestine animal control officers Terry Garner and Nikki Farrell responded to the 4500 block of W. Oak St. in reference to a report of several cats on the porch of a mobile home.
Upon arrival at the home, the officers found two cages containing a total of 31 cats of various ages, with a total of 37 cats collected at the location and turned over to personnel at the animal shelter.
According to the Palestine Police Department, animal control officers were eventually able to contact two elderly persons who owned the cats and were in the process of moving.
Due to the potential violations regarding the number of cats within the city, the owners voluntarily turned over the cats to the Animal Control Department.
In addition, Adult Protective Services was notified of the incident due to the living conditions of the mobile home (cat feces and debris, etc.), which the animal control officers considered unlivable.
No charges are pending against the residents.
