Humorist and award-winning speaker Jeanne Robertson will share her version of Southern humor during a Piney Woods Fine Arts Association show set for 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23 at the Crockett Civic Center.
Towering over her peers literally and figuratively, Robertson can be heard on SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s Family Comedy and Blue Collar Comedy channels.
“Standing 6’2, she is a commanding presence on the stage and will have you rolling in the aisles with laughter as she regales you with stories of her travels, life with left-brain and winning Miss Congeniality in the 1963 Miss America Pageant,” a PWFAA news release said.
Born and raised in Graham, N.C., Robertson was a head above her classmates from early on. She was Miss North Carolina in 1963 and went on to compete in the Miss America Pageant. It was her turn as Miss North Carolina that led to her career as a public speaker. After a year of speaking as a pageant winner, Robertson finished her degree at Auburn University then went on teach physical education in high school and college. The phone kept ringing for requests for her to speak at groups and organizations; and in 1976 she quit teaching and started speaking full-time.
A member of NSA/Carolinas, she served as president of the National Speakers Association in 1985. In 1989 she became the first woman to receive that association’s most cherished honor, the Cavett Award. The Cavett is awarded annually to one member “whose accomplishments, integrity and reputation are a credit to NSA and the speaking profession.”
Toastmasters International named Robertson the recipient of its 1998 Golden Gavel Award, given annually to one individual for accomplishments in leadership and communications. She is the only female professional speaker who has received this honor. Other recipients include Lowell Thomas, Walter Cronkite, Earl Nightingale, Art Linkletter, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Tom Peters, Mark Russell, Ken Blanchard and Zig Ziglar.
Robertson has produced seven humor DVDs and CDs and written three books on humor — “Humor: The Magic of Genie,” “Mayberry Humor Across the USA” and “Don’t Let the Funny Stuff Get Away.” These books are filled with reality-based stories, which illustrate her humor philosophy.
This show is presented by the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association with KIVY/KMVL Radio, County Life, Houston County Courier and Messenger. The sponsors for this event are SGG Enterprises and Cutshaw Chevrolet.
