County gets 5 AED units

PALESTINE — The Anderson County Emergency Management office has recently announced the receipt of five new Automated External Defibrillator units to be placed in the county courthouse and annex.

The AEDs are being provided to the county by a Citizen Corps grant program, overseen by Stephanie Walker of the Texas Department of Health.

“We were approached by the District Attorney’s office about getting them,” County Emergency Management Coordinator Tammy Lightfoot said. “I called Stephanie and asked for them, and we got them.”

The five AEDs will be kept in the county judge’s office and the Emergency Management Office at the annex, on the first and third floors of the courthouse and at the sheriff’s office.

“The county judge and justices of the peace are holding more court,” Lightfoot said, “so there has been an increase in traffic in both the courthouse and the annex.

“We felt that having these AEDs in the buildings would be a good idea.”

An AED is a portable device that is used to treat sudden cardiac arrest. It checks the heart rhythm, and if needed, it can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm.
