Palestine man arrested on drug charges
PALESTINE — A 59-year-old Palestine man was arrested Sunday night on a trio of drug charges during a traffic stop near the U.S. 287/Texas 19 split, northwest of the Palestine city limits.
Daniel Boone Cummings Jr. 59, of Palestine was charged with three drug offenses, including a felony, during the traffic stop after authorities say they found him in possession of a total of almost 150 various pills.
Among the pills found in a bottle belonging to Cummings were Hydrocodone, a popular painkiller; Xanax, an anti-anxiety medication; and Carisoprodol, a muscle relaxer, according to Troy Black, chief deputy for the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.
At 8:01 p.m. Sunday, Black said sheriff’s Cpl. Lee Duren and reserve sheriff’s deputy Gary Russell were dispatched to a report of a reckless driver on U.S. 287 North traveling into Palestine.
The officers identified a Chevrolet van matching the description and made a traffic stop at the 287/19 split, according to Black.
The van was operated by a 39-year-old Palestine woman, the chief deputy said. The lone other passenger was ultimately identified as Cummings, he added.
“While they were talking (to the van’s occupants), they smelled the odor of marijuana in the vehicle,” Black said.
Officers subsequently located a prescription bottle belonging to Cummings which “had the label scratched off,” the chief deputy stated.
Cummings was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance between 28 and 200 grams; possession of a controlled substance less than 28 grams; and possession of a dangerous drug, according to Black.
The former is a third-degree felony, while the other charges are Class A misdemeanors, he added.
