This holiday season, the Palestine Community Theatre will bring “A Christmas Carol,” adapted for the stage by Palestine native Gerry Don Goodwin, to the historic Texas Theater for a one-weekend-only performance Dec. 7-9.
Before the Friday and Saturday performance of ‘A Christmas Carol,’ guests are invited to tour both floors of the historic home of PCT board members Michael and Amelia Cook for a “Wine and Wassail Tour and Pre-show Fundraiser” for the theater.
The Cook family recently finished an 18-month renovation on their historic home, located on Cedar street, with local contractor Cesar Acevedo.
“Join PCT for drinks, hors d’oeuvres, live music and fabulous décor at the historic home of Michael and Amelia Cook and get into the Christmas spirit on Dec. 7-8 from 5 to 7 p.m. before the curtains open at the Texas,” a PCT news release said. “Pianist Kevin Guinn will be performing along with local vocalists during the Wine and Wassail Tour of the 1898 colonial home.”
Tickets are $25 and include tour of the home, meal, drinks and ticket to the show. The “Wine and Wassail” tickets are limited and will be sold on a first come basis. Call Education Unlimited at 903-723-8383 for more information.
Goodwin has spent the last year crafting his adaptation of “A Christmas Carol.” He has performed in 12 productions at the Texas Theater and is ready to bring his adaptation of this classic tale to the stage as the director.
Goodwin’s adaptation embraces Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol,” about Ebenezer Scrooge, a miserly old man who believes that Christmas is just an excuse for people to miss work and for idle people to expect handouts.
He doesn’t believe in all of the good cheer and charity that the season promotes, and he makes sure everyone knows it. Then one night, Scrooge is visited by the ghost of his former business associate, Jacob Marley — a man who was as greedy and cold as Scrooge is.
Three ghosts visit Scrooge successively: the Ghost of Christmas Past, the Ghost of Christmas Present, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come. They show Scrooge his error in valuing money over people.
Scrooge is frightened by the bleak picture of his life and promises to change his ways. He awakes on Christmas morning a new man and carries the spirit of Christmas with him all the year round!

Tickets for "A Christmas Carol" are $12 for adults and $8 for children. “Wine and Wassail Tour and Pre-show Fund-raiser” tickets are $25, and includes tour, drinks, hors d’oeuvres and a ticket to “A Christmas Carol” at the Texas Theater.
