Former deputy who found Oswald’s rifle to speak at local church

A former Dallas County sheriff’s deputy who found Lee Harvey Oswald’s rifle in the Texas School Book Depository in Dallas right after the assassination of President John Kennedy in 1963, will speak at a local church this Sunday.

Gene Boone of Abilene will tell his story and give a PowerPoint presentation regarding the Kennedy assassination during a special assembly in the church auditorium with all of the adult and teen Bible classes at 9:30 a.m. Sunday at Crockett Road Church of Christ in Palestine. Guests are invited to attend.

Following the 10:30 a.m. worship service, a covered luncheon will be held.

“I think people will find him interesting because there is so much mystery surrounding the Kennedy assassination,” Crockett Road Church of Christ Minister Dan Manuel said. “They will get to hear the story first-hand from someone who was there and one of the first people on the scene, versus what you may have seen on TV or in the movies.

“He also will shed light on the grassy knoll theory.”

After the assassination, Boone went to Washington to testify on the Warren Commission and is a narrator at the Texas School Book Depository Museum in Dallas.

Boone was quoted as saying that “most of the books and movies written about the Kennedy assassination really belong in the fiction section of the library.”

Boone also was acquainted with Jack Ruby, the man who killed Oswald. Boone was working at the Dallas Times Herald at the time working in sales and was responsible for securing advertisements for Ruby’s establishment as well as others in the downtown Dallas area prior to becoming a deputy with the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department.

“Gene knew Ruby and will give his theory on why he shot Oswald,” Manuel said.

Manuel and his family have been friends with Gene and his wife Charmaine Boone for many years. Manuel and Boone worked together with the Sunset Church of Christ in Dallas before leaving in 1972 to enter into Christian childcare at Medina Children’s Home.

As their life’s work, the Boones been involved with Christian child care for more than 40 years, trying to help children in their life’s struggles, retiring in 2005. After retiring, they spent seven years RVing full-time through the United States. They now are enjoying their retirement in Abilene and worship at Southern Hills Church of Christ, still keeping active with their family and church functions.

The Boones have three grown children, six grandchildren and one great grandson.

Crockett Road Church of Christ is located at 1717 Crockett Rd. in Palestine. For more information, call the church at 903-723-6291.
