PALESTINE —
Texas Ranger Sgt. Rudy Flores and other members of the Texas Rangers’ Company ‘B’ Major Crime Scene Team were honored Tuesday at the East Texas Peace Officers’ Association’s annual training conference in Longview.
Flores and five other team members received the Murdock Memorial Award which is named in honor of the late Johnny Murdock, the former director of technical services for the Nacogdoches Police Department, and his daughter, the late Debra Murdock Kerss, who followed in her father’s footsteps.
To be considered for the award, the East Texas Peace Officers’ Association’s web site indicates nominees must be engaged in the field of technical law enforcement -- fingerprinting; photography; polygraph; ballistics; forensic pathology; or the many other fields that aid law enforcement investigators, including dispatchers or jailers.
Flores, who is stationed in Palestine, served as team leader of the honored team, while other members included John Vance of Sulphur Springs, Michael Adcock of Athens, Laura Simmons of Greenville, Eric Kasper of Garland and Brent Davis of Tyler.
The Company ‘B’ Major Crime Scene Response Team was created by Company ‘B’ Commander Bryant Wells for the primary purpose of providing a group of highly-trained and skilled Ranger personnel to respond to and conduct scene investigation, documentation, reconstruction and evidence collection within Company ‘B.’
Company ‘B’ includes 42 Texas counties and almost a quarter of the state’s population. It is currently the largest company of Rangers with a major, three lieutenants and 24 Rangers.
Company ‘B’ personnel are involved in investigations ranging from murders, kidnappings and other violent crimes-to-computer and public integrity crimes. The Rangers work with law enforcement agencies of all sizes, including local, county, state and federal agencies.
The East Texas Peace Officers’ Association has been serving the peace officers of the region for more than 60 years since its inception in 1951.
