PALESTINE —
A 44-year-old Anderson County man was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl who had been living at his residence. Robbie Lynn Newby, 44, of Grapeland was arrested around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday by Anderson County sheriff’s deputies during the course of a traffic stop on CR 1772 near his residence southeast of Elkhart in extreme southern Anderson County, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Newby is an ex-convict on parole after serving time for possession of marijuana between 4 ounces and 5 pounds, according to the sheriff.
“This charge involves him having sexual relations with a girl numerous times who is now 17, but was 16 at the time,” Taylor said. “He was coercing her into having sex with him since February through intimidation.”
The age of consent in Texas is 17.
The alleged victim and her two sisters -- ages 10 and 13 -- have been living with Newby for some period of time, according to the sheriff.
“This child’s mom is in prison,” Taylor said. “The children were staying with him.”
After the alleged victim made an outcry, authorities began their investigation Saturday and obtained a warrant for Newby’s arrest Tuesday.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Ronnie Foster is the case’s lead investigator.
The sheriff said he fears there might be other similar cases involving Newby.
“If anyone else has any other information about incidents that might have occurred with this individual, we urge them to contact the sheriff’s office.” Taylor said. “We’re afraid this might not be an isolated incident. He’s definitely somebody we believe might be a repeat offender in this type of stuff. He’s a child predator.”
Anyone with information which might be pertinent to the case or wishing to report similar offenses involving the suspect are asked to contact Foster at (903) 729-6068.
