Backseat Molly to perform benefit concert Friday

PALESTINE — Local Texas music band Backseat Molly will donate their talent to a good cause this week, performing Friday for the “Give Back for Willy Jack Concert” at Shelton Gin in Palestine.

The benefit will help raise funds to for the family of Will “Willy Jack” McClendon, who died in a four-wheeler accident Aug. 2 in Mena, Ark.

The show will start at 8 p.m. with $10 admission per person, which will all go to the family.

“It’s always hard when you lose somebody, but especially when they are the provider of the family, so we wanted to do what we can to help,” Backseat Molly lead singer Steven Callaway said. “Palestine is our hometown. I think anytime anybody can come out for their hometown for a benefit to help someone in the community, they should. Come out, have a good time and donate a little money to go to a good cause.”

Backseat Molly, which won the Texas Music Award’s 2011 Rising Star of the Year award, will perform music from their CD “Texas Not Tennessee.”

The band is about to start work on a new album, Callaway said.

Backseat Molly’s band includes Callaway, Heath Mays, Brendan Gilman, Trevor Callaway, Brennon Jones and Benjamin West.

During the benefit, t-shirts will be sold for $20, with all the money going to the family. For every Coors Light beer sold, $1 will be given to the family, because it was McClendon’s favorite beer.

Several drawings will be held throughout the night with items from Unique Boutique, Aahhsome Salon and Day Spa, Bounce Off the Walls, Denby’s, Ranch House, Jamie’s Therapeutic Touch Day Spa, H&W Honda, Sherry’s Custom Framing, Sportsman’s Memory Shop, Grapeland Messenger, Omgee Photography, Shelton Gin and more. Tickets will be sold for $2 each or six for $10.

McClendon is survived by his wife, Julie Miller McClendon; parents, Dennis and Syretta McClendon; daughter, Amy Sue Hightower and husband Bill; son, David Paul McClendon and wife Tiffany; sister, Mary Crutcher and husband Ted; brothers, James McClendon and wife Bridget, Ken McClendon and wife Daisy; and grandchildren, McKenzie Hightower, Preston Hightower and Ryder McClendon, all of Palestine.

Shelton Gin is located at 310 E. Crawford St. in Old Town Palestine.
