PALESTINE —
Palestine Police continue to investigate a Wednesday incident during which a 31-year-old local man was shot in the side while allegedly purchasing a gun.
According to reports, at approximately 9 p.m. Wednesday, police officers were dispatched to Palestine Regional Medical Center concerning a victim with a single gunshot wound to the right side.
During the initial stages of the investigation the victim, identified as 31-year-old Edgar Torres of Palestine, reported that he was in the 400 block of Cherokee Street when the incident occurred.
“(He) informed officers that he was looking at a handgun that he was going to purchase,” Sgt. James Muniz reported. “The victim indicated that he caused the gun to accidentally discharge and he was hit in the side. He was not able to give the names of any other person that was there at the time of the incident.”
Based on information obtained from the victim, it was determined that Torres was in Green's Park at the time of the incident. Officers went to the park, however, no evidence of a shooting was found.
The victim was reported in stable condition at Palestine Regional Medical Center. His injuries were not considered to be life threatening.
Detectives from the Palestine Police Department also spoke with the victim and gained no additional information. The case is still under investigation.
