PALESTINE —
Palestine Independent School District trustees are scheduled to tour the construction at Palestine High School during a special meeting Monday.
The meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Palestine High School cafeteria at 1600 S. Loop 256.
The essentially new high school was part of a $64 million bond package overwhelmingly approved by PISD voters in May 2009.
Improvements at the new high school will include new classrooms; two new gyms; a new band hall; a new office; a new library; a new dining and kitchen area; new science labs; and a new auditorium with lights, rigging and sound.
District officials have said they expect the new high school to be ready for the start of the 2012-13 school year which kicks off Monday, Aug. 27.
The tour is the only item listed on Monday’s agenda.
The PISD is also in the process of hiring a new high school principal following the resignation of Orlando Vargas who is leaving the district at the end of the current school year.
Approximately 45 persons applied for the principal’s vacancy, according to PISD Superintendent Jason Marshall, with four finalists being interviewed earlier this month by a committee of high school teachers.
Marshall had previously indicated the new high school principal might be hired before the end of the month, but said Friday it appears now the board will vote on the proposed candidate during its next regular monthly meeting on Monday, May 21.
