PALESTINE —
Elkhart Mayor Raymond Dunlap was recently appointed to the Review Committee of the East Texas Council of Governments by Texas Gov. Rick Perry.
Dunlap, who already serves on ETCOG’s board of directors, has already attended his first meeting of the committee on April 25.
“It sets up the criteria for matching grants and block grants,” Dunlap said Tuesday about the committee’s work. “At the meeting, we decided to continue to use the same criteria for the grant process (in 2013-14) that has been used in the past.”
Dunlap is one of 12 members of the committee, the only one representing Anderson County. Committee meetings are held on an as-needed basis, with unlimited terms.
“I thinks this is great,” he said. “It is a good step that they asked me to serve. I am glad to represent Anderson County and East Texas.”
ETCOG distributes grants like the Community Development Block Grant program, which provides financial assistance to cities with populations less than 50,000 and for counties under 200,000.
The CDBG is one of the longest continuously run programs of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developments. Its goal is to ensure decent affordable housing, to provide services to residents and to create jobs through the expansion and retention of businesses.
In his second term as mayor for the City of Elkhart, Dunlap also serves as a co-chair of the Anderson County Appraisal District and as chairman of the Anderson County Crimestoppers.
“I just want to make a difference while I am here,” he said.
