Voters cast ballots in primary elections today

PALESTINE — Voters in Anderson County and throughout the state have until 7 p.m. today to cast their ballots in the party primary elections.

Anderson County residents should vote at their usual polling place. There are 24 voting boxes throughout the county.

More than 2,000 votes were cast during the early voting period in Anderson County, with an overwhelming majority of those made in the Republican Primary.

Of the 2,013 votes cast in Anderson County, 1,836 came in the Republican Primary where there is a countywide contested race for sheriff and a pair of precinct constable races.

In the sheriff’s race, incumbent Greg Taylor is seeking his third term, facing Palestine police officer Richard Welch. With no other candidates, Tuesday’s winner will begin a four-year term on Jan. 1, 2013.

Precinct 1 and precinct 3 have contested constable races on the Republican side.

Ronnie Foster and Jeff Taylor, who are both employees of the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, are vying for the GOP nomination in precinct 1 constable’s race, with the winner set to face Democrat Larry Bennett in the Nov. 6 general election.

In the precinct 3 constable’s race, incumbent Kim Dickson is once again being challenged by Ronnie Holcomb, a deputy with the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office.

Four years ago, Dickson nudged Holcomb by 61 votes.

There are no other entries in the precinct 3 constable’s race, so the Dickson-Holcomb victor will start a four-year term on Jan. 1, 2013.

There are no contested county races in Anderson County in the Democratic Primary.
