PALESTINE —
A 36-year-old Palestine man remained in the Anderson County Jail Wednesday following his weekend arrest for allegedly first fleeing from authorities and then resisting arrest.
Eric Dewayne Hill, 36, of Palestine was arrested during the wee morning hours Sunday and charged with multiple offenses, including evading arrest/detention with a motor vehicle; evading arrest/detention; and resisting arrest or search, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.
Around 3:45 a.m. Sunday, Taylor said Anderson County sheriff’s deputy Donnie Myers attempted to stop a 1999 Ford Crown Victoria on East Palestine Avenue for an expired registration sticker.
The deputy activated his overhead lights and siren, the sheriff continued.
“The subject (later identified as Hill) refused to pull over and drove about four blocks,” Taylor said.
The sheriff said Hill eventually stopped at a residence on Durham Street “and jumped out (of his vehicle), went to the rear of the residence and took off running.”
Myers and fellow sheriff’s deputy Johnny Gordon, who had responded to the area to provide backup, caught up to Hill after a short foot pursuit and got him placed in handcuffs after a brief struggle, according to Taylor.
The sheriff said his agency received information following Hill’s arrest that he may have been in possession of illegal narcotics at the time of Sunday’s incident.
“We believe this individual...he was running because he had narcotics,” Taylor said. “We were not able to find them after he ran. We don’t know how much or what, we just have that information. So it makes sense why he ran.”
As of late Wednesday afternoon, Hill remained in the Anderson County Jail in lieu of bonds totaling $45,000 set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace Gary Thomas, according to records.
Hill also faces a $150 fine for the expired registration, records indicated.
