PALESTINE —
Texas Department of Public Safety officials say they are uncertain why a 58-year-old California man was standing outside his tractor-trailer when he was struck and killed by another motorist late Saturday night.
Jose Monroy, 58, of Hawthorne, Calif. was killed around 9:49 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 79, slightly south of the Palestine city limits, after being struck by a northbound SUV operated by a Palestine woman, according to local DPS Sgt. Phillip Davis.
Davis said his agency believes Monroy was the “co-driver” of a truck making a delivery to the Wal-Mart Distribution Center No. 6036 in Tucker.
“From what we understand, the truck was in the center lane (near the entrance of the distribution center),” Davis said. “For some reason, the co-driver (Monroy) was outside the truck while it was parked in the center lane.”
Monroy was pronounced dead at the scene by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd after being struck by a northbound 2011 Nissan Armada SUV operated by Drusillia Forward of Palestine, according to the sergeant.
“At this point, there does not appear to be negligence on the driver,” Davis said. “Very rarely, do you expect someone to be standing in the lane of traffic.”
DPS Trooper Leonard Sandifer investigated the fatal wreck and was assisted by DPS Trooper Chad Sparkman.
Hawthorne is a city of approximately 85,000 residents in southwestern Los Angeles County.
