PALESTINE —
The Anderson County Legal Professionals’ Association recently awarded $3,000 in scholarships to deserving high school seniors or a student currently enrolled in a junior college, four-year college, and university or business school desiring to continue their education.
Applicants were chosen based upon their academic excellence, involvement in extra-curricular activities, dedication to community service and financial need.
The recipients listed below were introduced at a recent luncheon held in their honor.
• David Paul Ives, a senior at Slocum High School, received a $1,000 scholarship. Ives plans to get his basics at Trinity Valley Community College and pursue a career in wildlife management.
• Kristen Danielle Green, a senior at Neches High School, received a $1,000 scholarship. Kristen plans to attend East Texas Baptist University where she will pursue a career in law enforcement.
• Samantha Lea Barber, a senior at Palestine High School, received a $500 scholarship. Samantha plans to attend Trinity Valley Community College and pursue a career in education.
• Crystal Yvonne Bañuelos, a senior at Palestine High School, received a $500 scholarship. Crystal plans to attend Texas A&M University where she will pursue a career in speech therapy.
The ACLPA congratulates these recipients and thanks the community for supporting its “Burger on the Square” fundraiser, which allows them to provide the annual scholarships.
WHS ‘82 reunion slated
The Westwood High School Class of 1982 will host its 30th class reunion on Saturday, Aug. 11 at Bella Sera Ranch in Palestine.
WHS Classes from 1980-1984 are invited to come and join the reunion at 8 p.m. to dance and reminisce about old times. The cost is $10 for singles and $15 for couples.
The WHS Class of ’82 has set up a web site at www.westwoodpanthers1982.myevent.com to help organize the reunion.
If you are a member of the class of ’82, please go online and update your information and let the organizers know whether or not you will be attending the reunion.
Woodhouse School Reunion set
The Woodhouse School ex-student reunion will be held on Oct. 20 at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center.
Those who have not received an invitation you may call 903-538-2958. The registration deadline is Sept. 1, so that food accommodations can be made.

The Palestine Police Department and City Marshal’s Office has announced their participation in the 2013 national Click It or Ticket seat belt enforcement mobilization to help save lives by cracking down on those who don’t buckle up.

Anderson County Commissioners OK grant application for sheriff's office
During a special meeting Friday, Anderson County commissioners gave the go-ahead to Sheriff Greg Taylor to apply for a grant that would help fund salaries for two additional drug unit investigators for the department.

Fund established for West relief effort
