Tip leads to arrest of top suspect

PALESTINE — After notifying the community of its search, Anderson County sheriff’s authorities arrested one of their “Top Five” burglary suspects last week in Palestine.

Randall Keith Speed, 29, was arrested Wednesday at a home on the 200 block of Oakland Street, after the ACSO received an anonymous tip regarding his location.

“When our officers found Speed in the front lawn of the residence, he ran,” Sheriff Greg Taylor said. “When they caught him, he put up a pretty good fight. They took a knife away from him.”

Deemed one of the county’s “Top Five” burglary suspects by county law enforcement, Speed’s bond violations are related to original charges of possession of a controlled substance 1-to-4 grams, arson and failure to appear, according to Taylor.

Newly incurred charges include aggravated assault with a deadly weapon - public servant, $75,000 bond; evading/resisting arrest, $75,000 bond; possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility, $25,000 bond; possession of a controlled substance - PG1, less than 1 gram, $25,000 bond; giving false identification - fraudulent use/possession of identification, $5,000.

“We found some meth on his person after we brought him in to the jail,” Taylor said about the possession of a prohibited substance in a correctional facility charge. “No bond has been set on the arson or failure to appear - possession charges. A hearing will have to be set for those.”

Taylor reported that five ACSO officers were involved in Speed’s arrest — Sgt. Donnie Myers, Sgt. Gabe Wallace, Investigator Ryan Tolliver and patrol deputies Jeff Taylor and Ronnie Howell.

One of the officers was injured in the altercation and arrest, the sheriff said, but was treated and released at Palestine Regional Medical Center for a bruised hand.

“(Speed) is a dangerous individual and we are glad to have him off the streets,” the sheriff said. “We appreciate the anonymous tip that help us in his arrest.”

Speed remained in jail as of Monday, Taylor said.
